Today is March 394th, 2020, and this blog is due for an update. Here are some things I’ve been up to. For the past couple months, I’ve been living on part of an island mainly accessible by boat.
I came here to escape the city for a while. Not to flee Corona exactly, but more to shake myself out of the state of mind that it brought about. If I was going to be isolated anyways, it would make sense to spend that time where isolation is natural. It would also give time and space to think about certain bad habits and poor choices made last year. So I booked an Airbnb, packed my shit, and went.
- People allow themselves to let their guard down around others here. I’ve had long conversations with neighbors. They talk very openly about their families, marriages, careers. I think I actually have more contact with people here than when I was living in the city during quarantine.
- Unpaved roads, with more animals on them than cars.
- Nightly assault by mosquitoes!
- I’m starting to miss restaurants.
Overall it’s been a great experience. I’ve been getting back into exercise (but not quite as much as I’d like) and home cooking (but not quite as much as I’d like). Luckily patience and acceptance is also something quickly learned in quiet places.
This week I’m moving back to the city and applying what I learned out here. This may be the last move I do for a while. Furniture is being purchased. Little roots are being grown. Nomad life has been fun, but maybe it’s time to stop feeling like a tourist in my own country.
Anyways, here’s a photo of a pensive-looking marmoset friend:
